Cooperative education offers a unique hybrid of academic and theoretical understanding with real world experiences.

Cooperative
education is a structured educational strategy integrating classroom
studies with learning through productive work experiences in a field
related to a student’s academic or career goals. It provides
progressive experiences in integrating theory and practice. National Commission for Cooperative Education

Unlike internships, they are an intergal part of the experience and are paid at market rates. A good coop program will include:

• Formal recogniation of work as part of the experience
• Structure to allow multiple work experiences
• Ongoing advising
• Formal agreement between student and employer that emphaisis work as learning
• and that the work is meaningful not just “make work” or observational

Students gain much from coop:

• Real world applications for the knowledge
• Money since coop is paid
• A meaningful resume with references
• Understanding of the world of work and the variety of institutions one could work for.
