Nicole Verardi at NACAC posts a provocative article on MySpace and other such sharing sites as they relate to college admissions. While college admission officers admit that they have little time or inclination to track down applicant blogs, she does cite on case where what was written in a blog was held against an applicant.
Since plays like MySpace are public sharing forumns, students do need to be advised on having clear boundaries. Sould the CyberSelf be a soul-baring exercise in candor? The internet has no confidentiality assurances–in fact, Yahoo and Google have repeatedly shown that they will open the books (or emails) on dissidents in certain countries.
As a blogger myself, my advice is simple:
1) What is the purpose of your blog?
2) Who is your audiance?
3) Who is potentially easdropping?
4) Would your grandmother be surprised or embarrased by what is there?
5) Would you make the declarations outloud in front of your classmates or co-workers?
Happy Blogging.
